Tour of Beijing stage 5: Galimzyanov secures breakthrough victory, Martin wins overall

Stage 5: Tiananmen Square to Bird’s Nest Stadium, 118km

Katusha’s Denis Galimzyanov comfortably won the bunch sprint outside the Bird’s Nest Stadium to cement victory in the points classification at the inaugural Tour of Beijing. Meanwhile Tony Martin finished safely in the pack to seal victory in the final major stage race for the soon-to-be-dissolved HTC-Highroad team, having led after each of the race’s five days.

Tour of Beijing stage 4: Lucky 13 for Viviani in Liquigas one-two

Stage 4: Yanqing Gui Chuan Square to Shunyi Olympic Rowing & Canoeing Centre, 189.5km

The fourth – and longest – stage of the Tour of Beijing finished in a regulation sprint after a six-man escape had broken away from the peloton for most of the day. Up-and-coming Italian sprinter Elia Viviani led teammate Peter Sagan over the finish line for a Liquigas-Cannondale one-two at the end of a stage which skirted along a long section of the Great Wall to the north-east of the Chinese capital.

Tour of Beijing stage 3: Roche keeps up the family tradition

Stage 3: Mentougou to Yongning, 162km

Nicolas Roche finally delivered his first World Tour victory – and his first international race win of any kind in over three years – winning the Tour of Beijing‘s queen stage from a small breakaway group which held off the charging peloton by a single second. At the age of 27, it was a rich reward for both a rider of undoubted talent and his AG2R La Mondiale team as it battles to maintain its place among the elite 18 UCI ProTeams.

Tour of Beijing stage 2: Haussler wins by a whisker

Stage 2: Bird’s Nest to Mentougou, 137km

Garmin-Cervélo’s Heinrich Haussler just held on in the bunch sprint at Mentougou in a tight and scrappy finish on a relatively straightforward day for race leader Tony Martin and the other overall contenders. It was the Australian’s first win since his double at February’s Tour of Qatar, as he edged out Denis Galimzyanov (Katusha) on the line.

Tour of Beijing stage 1: Martin rules the roost at the Bird’s Nest

Stage 1: Bird’s Nest to Water Cube, 11.3km individual time trial

British riders occupied four of the top five spots in the Tour of Beijing‘s opening individual time trial, but none could match newly crowned world time trial champion Tony Martin as the German yet again proved unbeatable against the clock. He blitzed the course 17 seconds faster than next-best David Millar – a blistering 1.5 seconds per kilometre quicker on average.
