Wigan proved that last week’s win over Manchester United was no one-hit wonder as they punched two holes in Arsenal‘s fragile defence in the space of a minute and deservedly held on to record a crucial win which lifts them five points clear of the relegation zone. Defeat left Arsenal five points clear of both Spurs and Newcastle, but having now played a game more, as they missed a golden opportunity to tighten their stranglehold on the third automatic Champions League spot.

111 – Nico Rosberg won the Chinese GP in Shanghai, his first Formula 1 win in his 111th race. His father Keke won five Grands Prix from 1982 to 1985, including the drivers’ title in 1982.

3 – The first three Formula 1 races of this season have been won by three different drivers: Jenson Button (Australia), Fernando Alonso (Malaysia) and Rosberg (China). But the championship is led by Lewis Hamilton, who has finished third in each of the three races.

51 – Neptune Collonges became the first grey to win the Grand National since Nicolaus Silver in 1961, 51 years ago.

Ruthless Arsenal throw Wolves to the, er, wolves

Arsenal knocked ten-man Wolves to the canvas twice in the opening minutes at Molineux and did not allow them to land a meaningful punch before finally administering the knockout blow midway through the second half. Goals by Robin van Persie, Theo Walcott and Yossi Benayoun made this as easy a victory as Arsenal have enjoyed all season, moving them five points clear of third-placed Tottenham. Meanwhile Wolves are nine points adrift of safety with only 15 still available. Terry Connor‘s side are now all but mathematically relegated.

Jayawardene scored his 31st century and the 2,000,000th Test run

2,000,000 – Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene scored the two millionth run in Test history en route to his 31st Test century on day one of the second Test against England in Colombo.

1 – Having lost all four previous Tests on their winter tours of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, England finally won in Colombo, as Kevin Pietersen hit 151 and 42 not out to lead England to an eight-wicket victory.

6 - In a race which had to be restarted halfway because of the intervention of a swimmer in the river, Cambridge won the 158th Boat Race to maintain their perfect record of having won on all six occasions when the event has been held on April 7th – although victory came courtesy of Oxford suffering a broken oar in a clash shortly after the restart.

Arteta’s bullet shoots down City’s title hopes

Arsenal left it late to clinch a game they had dominated throughout, but Mikel Arteta‘s late bullet strike effectively killed off Manchester City‘s title hopes, while giving his own side three crucial points to propel them back into third place. City were lacklustre and rarely threatened as they slipped eight points behind leaders Manchester United with just six games remaining. Meanwhile Arsenal reasserted their position as four teams – Spurs, Chelsea and Newcastle being the others – battle it out for the last two Champions League spots.
