Henry delivers a parting gift as substitutes lead Arsenal comeback

Sunderland 1 Arsenal 2

McClean 70; Ramsey 75, Henry 90+1

Legends write their own headlines. Just as it looked like Arsenal would have to settle for an honourable battling draw at a misty Stadium of Light, Thierry Henry poked home an injury-time winner to condemn high-flying Sunderland to defeat and ensure the Emirates Stadium faithful will continue to speak of his name in reverent tones long after he returns to the US next week. With Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle all losing, Arsenal climbed back into the top four.

Arsenal outflanked by United

Arsenal 1 Manchester United 2

van Persie 71; Valencia 45+1, Welbeck 81

Arsenal succumbed to a third consecutive Premier League defeat as familiar defensive weaknesses on the flanks and Danny Welbeck‘s late strike cost them at least a share of the points. The loss left them five points adrift of the top four despite the four teams immediately either side of them – Tottenham, Chelsea, Liverpool and Newcastle – mustering only a single point between them this weekend.

Van Persie’s clinical finish in striking contrast to Walcott

Arsenal 1 QPR 0

van Persie 60

For an hour, Arsenal appeared to be heading for the same stalemate as they did against Wolves four days previously, repeatedly spurning chance after chance against a battling but limited QPR defence. But, minutes after Theo Walcott had fired tamely wide when through one-on-one, captain Robin van Persie showed him how it should be done, beating Radek Černý with a clinical first-time shot. Arsenal had plenty of opportunities to pad their advantage, but a 1-0 win was nonetheless enough to elevate them into the top four at the mid-point of a season which had started so disastrously.

Arsenal lose tempo, rhythm and two points in draw with Fulham

Arsenal 1 Fulham 1

Vermaelen 82; Vermaelen (og) 65

On a day on which the entire Arsenal team donated a day’s wages to the charity Save the Children, they proved to be in an equally giving mood on the pitch. Thomas Vermaelen became the 31st player in the Premier League era – and the third Gunner – to score at both ends in the same game as Fulham battled hard and deservedly took a point on a night when Arsenal lacked both tempo and spark until the final 20 minutes.

Arsenal progress, but it’s no walk in the Park

Arsenal 2 Bolton 1

Arshavin 53, Park 56; Muamba 47

Who says Arsène Wenger deprioritises the Carling Cup? On a night where Bolton had the lion’s share of the chances, Arsenal had to come from behind to secure a place in the quarter-finals for the ninth consecutive year (extending their own record) with a battling performance in which the senior players employed down the spine of the team stepped up and provided the leadership required by their younger teammates. Goals by Andrey Arshavin and Park Chu-Young – his first for the club – within nine minutes of former Gunner Fabrice Muamba‘s opener were ultimately enough as Arsenal rode their luck to progress to the last eight.
