2 - Mark Cavendish followed in the footsteps of Tom Simpson by becoming only the second road cyclist to be crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SpotY). Cavendish had already emulated the achievement of Simpson 46 years earlier as the only British riders to win a World Championship road race, and also became the first Briton to win the green jersey at the Tour de France in 2011.

49.47% – In winning SPotY, Cavendish received a staggering 49.47% of the total votes cast between the ten shortlisted finalists, four times as many as runner-up Darren Clarke.

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPotY) Awards takes place at a star-studded ceremony at the BBC’s new MediaCityUK complex in Salford tomorrow (Thursday) night. Cycling world champion and Tour de France green jersey winner Mark Cavendish is the bookies’ favourite to become the first road cyclist since Tom Simpson in 1965 to win the coveted award. 57 – Age of former Brazilian football captain Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira – better known simply as Sócrates – who died in hospital in São Paulo after a three-month battle with illness. Instantly recognisable to a generation of football fans by his trademark beard and headband, he played 60 times for Brazil, scoring 22 goals from an attacking midfield position, and captained his country at the 1982 World Cup.

0 – Number of women in the final shortlist of ten candidates for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, which will be awarded on December 22nd.

58 - Winger Shane Williams capped his 87th and final Test with his 58th try in the final move of the game as Wales lost 24-18 to Australia at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

My sporting month: December 2011

December is traditionally a quiet month in the sporting calendar, with many sportspeople enjoying a well-deserved rest before their 2012 seasons kick off with a vengeance. But there is nonetheless plenty of sports-related action taking place this month, with drama assured in both the Premier League and the NFL, and the draw for Euro 2012 taking place this week (Friday).

Here are the top five events I will be looking towards to help while away the cold, dark nights in the run up to Christmas and the New Year.

SPotY-watch update

The final ten candidates competing for the chance to succeed Tony McCoy as BBC Sports Personality of the Year (SPotY) Awards was announced last night. The shortlist, determined by the votes of newspaper and magazine journalists, contains three golfers, no footballers and, unusually this year, no women. The winner will be announced at the ceremony at the BBC’s new MediaCityUK complex in Salford on Thursday 22nd December, but here is a quick run-down of the top ten – in descending order of the odds offered by bookmaker William Hill.
