56 – Jail sentence (in days) handed down to 21-year old student Liam Stacey, who made malicious and racist posts on Twitter in the wake of Fabrice Muamba‘s on-pitch heart attack two weeks ago.

1 – Sri Lanka beat England by 75 runs in the first Test at Galle to record their first win on home soil since Muttiah Muralitharan’s retirement in July 2010.

Tendulkar finally completed his century of centuries after waiting for more than a year

100 – Sachin Tendulkar finally ended a run of 33 innings – over the space of 370 days – without a hundred to become the first batsman ever to hit 100 international centuries, scoring 114 in a one-day international against Bangladesh in Dhaka. However, Bangladesh won the match by five wickets.

3 – Wales completed their Six Nations campaign with a third Grand Slam in eight years after their 16-9 victory over France.

5 – Italy’s 13-6 victory over Scotland left them bottom of the Six Nations table having lost all five games.

16 - Big Buck’s tied Sir Ken’s record of 16 consecutive jumps victories by winning the World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival for a record fourth time.

23 - World number one Victoria Azarenka recorded her 23rd consecutive victory of 2012 as she defeated Maria Sharapova 6-2 6-3 to win the Indian Wells tournament.

24 – Age of Italian MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli, who died after a crash at the Malaysian MotoGP in Sepang. He competed in 34 MotoGP races for Honda, setting two poles and recording two podium finishes. It was the first fatality in MotoGP since Japan’s Daijiro Katoh died after a crash at the 2003 Japanese GP, while last year Japan’s Shoya Tomizawa died in a Moto2 race in San Marino.

7 – Britain’s track cycling team dominated the European Track Championships in Apeldoorn, Holland, winning seven gold medals in the 13 events. No other country won more than one gold. They won the men’s keirin (Matt Crampton), omnium (Ed Clancy) and team pursuit, and the women’s keirin (Victoria Pendleton), omnium (Laura Trott), team sprint and team pursuit.

1 - At the halfway point of the group phase in the Champions League only Real Madrid still have a 100% record, although ten out of the 32 teams remain unbeaten.

Chopra has scored double centuries in consecutive games

228 – Varun Chopra became the first Warwickshire player ever to score double centuries in successive first-class games, as his 228 helped his side defeat Worcestershire by 88 runs in their Country Championship first division match.

86 – Needing just 145 to beat Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire were skittled out for just 86 in their second innings after Chris Read and Steven Mullaney had earlier put on a crucial 150 for Nottinghamshire’s seventh wicket.

50 – Lionel Messi scored his 50th goal of the season as Barcelona beat Osasuna 2-0 to maintain their eight-point advantage over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

6 – Rafael Nadal won his sixth Barcelona Open title with a 6-2 6-4 victory over fellow Spaniard David Ferrer. He is now unbeaten in his last 34 matches on clay.

43 – The AFL‘s newest team, the Gold Coast Suns, registered their historic first win in their fourth game, staging an incredible comeback from 40 points down to defeat Port Adelaide 104-101.

57 – Age of Grete Waitz – former women’s marathon world record holder, nine-time New York Marathon winner and 1983 world champion – who died on Tuesday after a six-year battle with cancer.

6 – Number of centuries scored by Mark Selby, a record for a 25-frame match, as he moved 12-5 ahead of Stephen Hendry in their second round match at the World Snooker Championship.

1 – Englishman Lee Westwood claimed golf’s world number one ranking after winning the Indonesian Masters. Compatriot Luke Donald could have edged ahead of him by winning The Heritage tournament, but lost in a play-off to Brandt Snedeker.

The Premier League in numbers

13 – Manchester United‘s 1-0 win over Everton marked the first time they have ever won 13 successive Premier League home games.

100 – In scoring the only goal of the game, Javier Hernández registered United’s 100th goal in all competitions this season.

7 – Liverpool‘s 5-0 win over Birmingham ended a run of seven consecutive league draws between the two teams.

9 – Sunderland‘s 4-2 win over Wigan ended a run of nine straight league games without a win.

903 – Fernando Torres‘ goal in Chelsea‘s 3-0 win over West Ham ended a run of 903 minutes in all competitions without a goal.

7 - In Arsenal‘s 2-1 defeat at Bolton, Robin van Persie set a new Premier League record by scoring in his seventh successive away match.

Torres cost Chelsea a British transfer record £50m

50,000,000 – Fee paid (in pounds) by Chelsea for Spain striker Fernando Torres, setting a new British transfer record. It is the fourth biggest transfer ever.

11 – Career Premier League goals scored by Andy Carroll, for whom Liverpool paid Newcastle £35m to sign.

16 – Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid 3-0 courtesy of a Lionel Messi hat-trick, setting a new La Liga record of 16 consecutive wins.

2 – Crashes suffered by British cycling sprinter Mark Cavendish so far this season, after he crashed in the prologue at the Tour of Qatar yesterday. He has yet to win in 2011.

Bobridge broke Boardman's iconic 4km pursuit record

4:10.534 – Time clocked by Australia’s Jack Bobridge for the four-kilometre individual pursuit at the Australian National Track Championships, breaking Chris Boardman‘s 15-year-old world record by 0.58s.

10 – Former Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt was handed a ten-year ban for spot-fixing by the ICC. Teammates Mohammed Asif and Mohhamed Amir were handed seven and five-year bans respectively.

137 – Runs scored by Jonathan Trott as England lost the sixth one-day international against Australia. It was the third highest ODI score by an England batsman abroad (David Gower 158 vs New Zealand, 1982/83; Graham Gooch 142 vs Pakistan, 1987/88).

1 – West Ham‘s 3-1 win at Blackpool in midweek was their first away win of the season.

54 – Wayne Rooney scored after just 54 seconds in Manchester United‘s 3-1 win over Aston Villa.

43 – Goals scored in this weekend’s Premier League games, the most ever in one round since the division was reduced to 20 teams in 1995/96.

8 – Penalties scored in Saturday’s eight games, breaking the previous record of six for a single day.

1 – Arsenal became the first team in the Premier League to fail to win after leading 4-0 as they drew 4-4 at Newcastle.

23 – West Bromwich Albion‘s 3-0 defeat at Manchester City was their 23rd consecutive game without keeping a clean sheet.

16 – West Brom manager Roberto di Matteo was subsequently sacked yesterday morning, becoming the 16th league manager to be dismissed in the 44 days since Christmas.

Pantsil completed a hat-trick of own goals

3 – John Pantsil scored his third own goal of the season in Fulham‘s 2-2 draw at Aston Villa, tying the Premier League record for a single season.

2 – Carlos Tevez became only the second player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick on his birthday (his 27th), after Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in March 2004.

4 – Stoke City defeated Sunderland 3-2, the fourth consecutive time they have beaten them at the Britannia Stadium by a one-goal margin.

29 – Wolves‘ 2-1 win over Manchester United’s ended their unbeaten league run at 29 games.

2 – Both Manchester United’s defeats this season have been against clubs at the bottom of the Premier League table – Wolves on Saturday and West Ham in the Carling Cup.

1 – Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge made them the first club to do the double over Chelsea since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003.

The Super Bowl in numbers

4 – The Green Bay Packers‘ 31-25 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers‘ was their fourth Super Bowl win in five attempts.

8 – This was the eighth straight year in which seven or fewer points separated the two teams in the fourth quarter.

2 – The Packers joined the 2005 Steelers as the only number six seeds to win a Super Bowl. (They are the sixth wild card team overall to win a Super Bowl, and the third team to do so after winning three road playoff games.)

21 – Points scored by the Packers off Pittsburgh’s three turnovers.

36 – In confirmation that the modern NFL is a pass-focused league, the two teams combined for just 36 rushing attempts, a record low. Green Bay ran the ball just 13 times, tying the record for the fewest rushing attempts by one team in a Super Bowl.

7 - Pittsburgh’s LaMarr Woodley recorded a sack for an NFL record seventh straight game.

14 – Green Bay won the pre-game coin toss, the 14th consecutive time the NFC team has won the toss at the Super Bowl.
