2 - Bradley Wiggins became only the second British cyclist (after Tom Simpson in 1967) to claim victory in the Paris-Nice stage race, as he won the final stage individual time trial to beat Lieuwe Westra by eight seconds overall. It was also Wiggins’ second major stage race win after the Criterium du Dauphine last year.

4 - Scotland were condemned to their fourth loss in as many matches in this year’s Six Nations as they lost 32-14 to Ireland. Similarly, Italy joined them with an identical record as they lost 24-3 in Wales, who can clinch a Grand Slam if they can beat France in Cardiff on Saturday.

Drogba missed a penalty in the final again

0 – Ivory Coast failed to win the Africa Cup of Nations despite not conceding a single goal in the entire tournament. Zambia beat them 8-7 on penalties after the teams played out a goalless draw in last night’s final.

3 – All three finals in which Ivory Coast have played have gone to a penalty shootout after finishing 0-0. They won the final in 1992 and lost in 2006.

2 – Didier Drogba missed a penalty in normal time. The Ivory Coast striker also missed from the spot in the 2006 final.

The week in numbers: w/e 5/2/12

90 – Age of legendary boxing trainer Angelo Dundee, who reportedly had a heart attack after being taken to hospital with a blood clot. Dundee worked alongside former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali for 20 years.

2 - The New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots 21-17 in Super Bowl XLVI in the early hours of this morning. It was the second time in the past five seasons the Giants have beaten the Patriots in the NFL title game. On both occasions they have scored the winning touchdown inside the final minute. Philander has made an astonishing start to his Test career

224 - Jacques Kallis, playing in his 150th Test, recorded his highest ever score of 224 as South Africa won the third and final Test in Cape Town to clinch a ten-wicket win and a 2-1 series victory over Sri Lanka.

30 - South Africa’s Vernon Philander took six wickets in the match, raising his totals after just four Tests to 30 wickets at an average of just 13.23 runs and one wicket every 25.2 balls.

1 - Andy Murray won his first tournament of 2012, defeating Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1 6-3 in the final of the Brisbane International.

Arsenal floored by late one-two punch

Arsenal were comprehensively outplayed in the second half by a determined Fulham side who snatched two late goals after the sending off of Johan Djourou to complete a dramatic turnaround. The visitors’ cause was not helped by some poor decisions by referee Lee Probert, but they had only themselves to blame for not taking full advantage of their domination before the interval.
